Jayaram began his career as a scriptwriter and a mimic, and soon he escalated into something more when he began filming as an actor and his great career movie was with Sathyan Anthikkad where he acted in the lead. He was a consistent actor and supported Mammootty and Mohanlal in a number of films, and his own films started running quite well, and since then he was hailed as a good actor. His acting has won several Filmfare and Kerala State Awards.
